Rumores: Nikon Z8/Z9

The reason for the different Nikon Z8 and Nikon Z9 specifications I have been reporting in the past few months is very simple: there are several different prototypes being tested and it is way too early to have a concrete set of specifications more than a year before the official announcement. Currently, I think Nikon is testing (and has been testing for a while) five different high-end Z cameras with different specifications and I was trying to combine all rumored specs into one camera. This was obviously wrong. Here are some details on three of the cameras that are/were being tested. All camera variations have a new PRO body design:

60 MP, 16 bit A/D model with a 5,76 MP viewfinder, 120 Hz refresh rate (we may expect something similar for the D850 replacement, without the EVF obviously).
The next test model has fewer megapixels and it’s designed for sport, same 5,76 MP 120 Hz viewfinder, very high frame rate (>20 fps), stunning AF tracking (better than the D6).
The third model has a 46 MP sensor, 20 fps, the viewfinder is also 5,76 MP with a 120 Hz refresh rate.
It seems that Nikon is aiming at a high megapixel model and a second camera for sport. My understanding is that the biggest problem/bottleneck is the processor (the 60MP sensor already exists). The Nikon Z8/Z9 rumors could be confusing for a few more months and then everything will start to make sense.

Did Nikon Just Provide a Z9 Focusing Clue?

“…The latest patent filed by Nikon in Japan concerning AF is an interesting one. Basically it describes an image sensor that performs with a global shutter during AF (i.e. composing) but switches to a rolling shutter for the actual image taking.

To understand why that would be desirable you have to look at what’s happening currently with many phase detect systems in mirrorless cameras. The old Aptina/Nikon method developed in the Nikon 1 cameras and still used by Nikon, Sony, and others is to use rows of sensor data that can be pulled off the image sensor simultaneously. In the current cameras, that’s every 12th row. Effectively, there’s a global shutter for every 12th row but a rolling shutter for all rows during image taking.

The reason you need a global shutter for focus information is that with moving subjects, the subject may have moved slightly by the time you read the next rolling shutter group of photosites. Focus accuracy can be compromised when relying upon rolling shutter information. Meanwhile, focus accuracy is compromised by the current system because it really only sees detail on the long axis (the rows of focus-enabled photosites, but with big gaps between rows).

The reason you don’t want a global shutter for the image data is that electronic noise of various sorts will compromise the dynamic range and photosite data integrity.

I keep seeing clues that some future Nikon camera—likely the Z9—will use all photosites for focus and introduce a focus system with better vertical data discrimination…”

Just a quick update: I received information from one of my good sources that the Nikon Z9 is rumored/expected to be announced in November/December timeframe.

Essas fotos aumentaram minha curiosidade.

Achei grade comparada com a câmera do lado.

É uma D6?

É a D5

I received some additional details on the upcoming Nikon Z9 mirrorless cameras:

8256 x 5504px resolution that confirms a 45MP stacked sensor (it is interesting to note that Canon decided to go with a 24MP sensor for their R3 camera).
The Z9 will be capable of up to 120 fps in a lower res file size (6Mb I think). Some reports even indicated 160 fps!
Built-in GPS – probably GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System).
The Z9 will use the same battery as D6. There will be also a new 18-type battery (EN-EL18x) that can be charged by the camera’s USB-C.
The sensor has multi leaf blade protective shutter that auto covers sensor when switched off/changing lens to stop dust and dirt on naked sensor.
The Z9 will have car autofocus in addition to animal and people AF as well as low light -7 EV.
Improved 3D tracking.
Improved articulated screen that even works in portrait mode – it is a completely new design.
New style locking flap for the two CFExpress memory cards.
Third joystick/selector added to use whilst camera close face and shooting.
Many new menu features to tweak and match your shooting style.
The shutter release sound level can be adjusted from silent to loud… so you can still get that D6 machine gun sound…
The official announcement is expected in the next 2 months, but do not expect many cameras to ship before the end of the year. Because of part shortage, the waiting time for the Z9 is expected to be very long.
